FAMILY at NNMMCAs a midwifery center servicing the needs of Northern New Mexico & Southern Colorado, including Taos, Española, Santa Fe & Los Alamos, we are deeply committed to creating an environment where families can safely bring their babies into the world with love, respect and honor.   We cater our care to the needs of the individual family, making space for unique circumstances and ways of being.

All families are welcome at the Midwifery Center regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, income level, national origin, and sexual orientation.   Our staff is bilingual in English and Spanish and we consider the diversity of our community to be one of our biggest strengths.

Education and freedom of choice are at the cornerstones of our practice.   It is our goal to help women learn about themselves and their amazing capabilities so that they can make well-informed decisions and feel good about themselves and their bodies.   There are as many different ways to be pregnant, give birth and enter into motherhood as there are women.   We support women to make the best possible choices for themselves, and encourage their families to take an active role as well.

BabyA woman who chooses her care at the Midwifery Center can birth at home or at our birth center with the midwife as her main provider, or in the hospital with the support of the midwife as a doula. Taos itself is unique in that approximately 25% of its families choose to give birth outside the hospital, as compared with 1-2% in the rest of the country. Many Taos families have come to understand that medical intervention when it is not necessary can create complications and are choosing to approach pregnancy and birth as natural life processes. This means that in Taos, medical intervention in birth is used less in situations where it is not necessary than in other parts of the country. This model is more in keeping with the birth practices of certain countries in Europe, where statistical outcomes for both moms and babies are better than they are here in the United States. We hope that all of Northern New Mexico & Southern Colorado, including Española, Santa Fe & Los Alamos can soon emulate the Taos experience more fully as they avail more fully of our midwifery services.

As midwives we work closely with backup physicians in situations where medical complications arise. We are meticulous in our assessment of moms and babies in order to ascertain when medical intervention is appropriate, and fully support its use when needed.   We feel blessed to have a healthy working relationship with our local hospital and to have access to reliable medical help whenever needed.
