The need for Donations
In Taos County, 27.5% of the population lives below poverty level, and unemployment is 15.7%. Approximately 85% of the Midwifery Center's clients are on pregnancy related Medicaid, which reimburses for midwifery services at a rate that does not cover what it costs to provide the services. Many of our services which we so clearly believe are vital to the well being of our clients, such as home visiting care, are not reimbursed by Medicaid at all.
The Midwifery Center aspires to the highest quality of services regardless of whether a necessary element of care is reimbursable by third party payers. Special services often include spending extra time counseling, teaching, and nurturing our clients. No one is ever turned away for inability to pay for services. Since 1997, the Center has given away over one and a half million dollars of free services to families in need.
